US: More sanctions to be imposed on Turkey

According to Mikrofonnews Agency (MHA), the United States of America has warned more sanctions will be imposed on Turkey if the American pastor detained by Turkey is not released quickly.

In a fiery speech against Turkey US President Donald Trump has said Turkey has proven that the country is not a good friend of America. He later tweeted:

“Turkey has taken advantage of the United States for many years. They are now holding our wonderful Christian Pastor, who I must now ask to represent our country as a great patriot hostage. We will pay nothing for the release of an innocent man, but we are cutting back on Turkey!”

Ties between Ankara and Washington have worsened unprecedentedly in the recent days that has affected economic and political relations between two countries.

The United States of America has urged Turkey to release Pastor Andrew Brunson who was detained in 2016 in Turkey after a failed military coup against President Erdogan’s government. He is accused of being involved in the coup against the Turkish government.

Pastor Brunson has denied the allegations. Turkey has rejected calls for releasing the American pastor who has lived in Turkey for more than two decades, saying the case is a matter for the courts.

US Treasury Department announced on Thursday that more sanctions are ready to be imposed on Turkey including sanctions against several Turkish ministers.
