UN Security Council hold meeting on Iran

According to Mikrofon news agency (MHA), UN Security Council held a meeting on Friday to discuss recent developments in Iran. The meeting was held at the request of the United States of America.

Iran’s ambassador to the UN has also attended the meeting. Ahead of the meeting Tehran accused Washengton of interfering “shamelessly” to the internal affairs of Iran. Iran has been scene of countrywide demonstrations against rising prices and corruption in the government in the recent days. U.S. has supported the demonstrations and Iran called the protests illegal.

At least 21 people were killed in clashes between protesters and Iran’s security forces in different parts of Iran. more than 1000 people have also been detained by the security forces. Hours before the meeting in the UN Security Council, a meeting was held behind the closed doors at the request of Russia, BBC reports.

Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the UN says world didn’t support Iran’s demonstrations in 2009 but this time U.S. will stand beside the Iranians. France said any change inside Iran should be brought by Iranians.

Kuwait expressed condolences with the families of victims who are killed by the Iranian security forces and has emphasized the crisis in Iran should be solved through diplomatic channels.  Britain said voice of Iranians should be heard and asked Iran to let the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Right to travel to Iran.

China and Russia in a similar stand said the UN Security Council is not authorized to take decision on Iran as this is the internal affair of a country. Russia said America has requested for the UN Security Council meeting not to discuss the human right situation in Iran but this is another effort by Washington to strike the nuclear deal with the country.
