John Bolton meets Russian ambassador amid growing tensions

According to Mikrofonnews Agency (MHA), White House has confirmed a meeting between the newly appointed U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton and Anatoly Antonov, Russian ambassador in Washington.

The meeting was held amid unprecedented tensions between Russia and America recently.

“Ambassador Bolton reiterated that it is in the interest of both the United States and Russia to have better relations, but that this will require addressing concerns regarding Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, the reckless use of chemical weapon in the United Kingdom, and the situations in Syria and Ukraine,” the White House said in a statement.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said U.S. President Donald Trump has invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to the White House, adding that two leaders will not allow their countries to face armed conflict.

Political ties between two countries have soured recently over several issues such as allegation of Russia’s involvement in a chemical attack against a former Russian spy in Britain and providing support for Bashar Assad in Syria.
