17 killed, more than 80 wounded in a heavy explosion in Iraq

According to Mikrofonnews Agency (MHA), at least 17 people were killed and more than 80 wounded after a heavy explosion hit a Shia dominated area in Iraq.

The explosion occurred in Sadr town of Baghdad city on Wednesday night. Some of the Iraqi officials said the incident was due to an explosion inside an ammunition depot.

The exact location of the depot is not clear but some security officials say the ammunition was inside the mosque. The cause of the explosion is under investigation but some sources suggest the explosion happened during the transferring of ammunition to a nearby parking.

Officials say the depot belonged to an armed group but haven’t released more details. Images posted by news agencies shows a complete destruction of the mosque and surrounding buildings home to hundreds of locals.
